How Do You Know If You Have Mold?

When you find black mold or other types in your home, the effects of the release of mold spores on your upper respiratory system can be worrisome. The experts at Disaster Kleenup Specialists can help. We can assess your situation and provide a safe solution to your problems.

Getting Started

When it comes to finding mold in your home, your eyes and your nose are the best tools to use to locate the problem so you can then get it properly tested and removed. Look around your home for black, green, brown, or even white spots or stains. Check rooms, spaces, and areas where water regularly collects, condensation is frequent, or damp conditions are constant, such as:

  • Bathrooms
  • Kitchens
  • Laundry rooms
  • Basements
  • Windows

In each of these rooms or areas, be sure to carefully inspect from the bottom of the baseboards to the ceilings, especially after a period of rain or snow. Mold usually gives off a musty smell, so be on the lookout for strange smells, too.

Hiding Bathroom Mold

One of the most common places to see mold is in the bathroom because showers and baths produce a mist of water in the air that may stick to tiles, walls, ceilings, fixtures, countertops, and mirrors. Other places to check in the bathroom include underneath the sink, around the entire toilet area, including the outside of the tank, behind the bowl, and inside the tank. If you don’t have a fan or the ability to open a window to let the moist air out, there is a high risk of mold growing in your bathroom.

In The Kitchen

In your kitchen, mold can collect anywhere there is standing water, so if you have a leaky sink or had one recently fixed, be sure to look under the sink with a flashlight for any signs. Another possible area of concern is in the creases of the seal on your refrigerator doors. Depending on the age of your appliance, this seal may not be 100% solid and may allow some condensation to build up over time, which can attract mold.

The Laundry Room And Basement

Common places for mold to collect in your basement may be around your furnace or air conditioning units that may have standing water or condensation. Sometimes, if a dryer isn’t properly vented out the window, water can get trapped on the inside of the dryer. A washer also has the potential for growing mold, so be sure to give your washer and dryer a thorough inspection inside and outside.
