California Flood Types

5 Types Of Floods During California’s Rainy Season

California’s rainy season typically runs from November to April, leaving vast areas of the state prone to flooding. At Disaster Kleenup Specialists of Monterey and Santa Cruz, we want you to know that we are here and ready to assist you with our water damage recovery services.

There are five different types of floods that can devastate regions of California during the rainy season and beyond.

  1. Ravine Flooding
  2. Alluvial Fan & Debris Flow Flooding
  3. Coastal Flooding
  4. Flash Flooding
  5. Localized Flooding

1. Ravine Flooding

When bodies of water such as lakes, streams, and rivers overflow or levees breach, Ravine flooding occurs. The Central Valley of California includes deep floodplains which periodically experience this type of disaster.

Ravine floods can also occur when heavy rainfall leads to excessive runoff, with large amounts of water accumulating and flowing over extensive areas of flatlands.

2. Alluvial Fan & Debris Flow Flooding

Alluvial fan flooding only occurs in alluvial fans, which are fan-shaped landforms created by sediment erosion. These landforms are common in parts of Central California. Debris flow is a combination of water, mud, and debris.

This type of flooding is common in areas where hillside vegetation has been destroyed by fire. Both types of disasters are common in California’s coastal areas, mountainous areas, and foothills.

3. Coastal Flooding

Tsunamis, triggered by volcanic eruptions, landslides, and earthquakes, are one of the best-known causes of coastal flooding. Storm surges are another. Coastal California communities, including those on the Central Coast, are at high risk.

4. Flash Flooding

This type of disaster, which can occur suddenly without any warning due to a sudden cloudburst or other heavy rainfall, is extremely dangerous. Flash floods happen everywhere, from remote desert arroyos to busy city streets.

According to the California Department of Water Resources, “Flash Flooding is the number one weather-related killer in the U.S. because it can roll boulders, tear out trees, and destroy buildings and bridges quickly.”

5. Localized Flooding

Urban areas are particularly prone to localized flooding, although it can also occur in non-urban areas. It occurs when local drainage systems are overwhelmed by steady rainfall. As the drainage system backs up, water can pool and overtake yards, streets, and buildings.
